“Neighbour’s Manual of Baita Community” is a site-specific and participatory art project that explores the evolving socio-cultural landscape of Baita Hutong in Beijing. Rooted in archival research, oral histories, and community engagement, the project investigates how small businesses, local traditions, and contemporary commerce coexist within Hutong’s intimate urban fabric. Through a multidisciplinary exhibition encompassing installation, sound, photography, text, and interactive workshops, artists will collaborate with residents, shop owners, and artisans to reinterpret the layered histories and present-day transformations of the neighbourhood.
By integrating creativity into the daily environment—alleyways, storefronts, and gathering spaces- which creates a walkable experience that blurs the boundaries between exhibition and living space. This initiative invites artists working across various disciplines to contribute site-responsive works that engage with themes of urban memory, social transition, and participatory art, fostering a dialogue between tradition and modernity in one of Beijing’s most historically significant yet rapidly changing districts.
